The Premier, Lara Giddings, today welcomed the announcement of the principal consultant for the University of Tasmania’s $75 million Academy of Creative Industries and Performing Arts (ACIPA).
Tasmanian firm, Liminal Architecture, has been awarded the role of principal consultant, and will partner with internationally-renowned Singaporean architects, WOHA and Arup Acoustics and Theatre to deliver the project.
“The Tasmanian Government’s contribution of $15.3 million to the Academy is an investment in the future of Tasmania’s creative industries,” Ms Giddings said.
“Today’s announcement is an important milestone in the Academy’s development, and I am delighted that a Tasmanian firm has been appointed as principal consultant.
“Liminal Architecture has a strong reputation for creating inspiring spaces through design that engages the community, which is a natural fit for a development that will meld Australia’s oldest operating theatre with a state of the art University facility.
“The establishment of the Academy of Creative Industries and Performing Arts will be a landmark development for Hobart, supporting jobs both in the construction industry and the creative sector once completed.
“The development is expected to create 255 jobs during the construction phase, injecting over $660 million into the local economy.”
Ms Giddings said ACIPA will utilise the NBN to allow the University to deliver creative industries programs to students all over Tasmania,
“It will also create synergies between the University, Theatre Royal and Hobart’s professional performing arts sector that will deliver ongoing economic and cultural benefits to the southern Tasmania, and further consolidate Hobart’s reputation as a cultural centre of excellence.
“Liminal’s links with WOHA has already resulted in a professional exchange between Singapore and Tasmania so I look forward to seeing the results of their collaboration on ACIPA.”
“I congratulate Liminal Architecture on their success in securing this tender and I look forward to seeing the vision for the Academy take shape,” Ms Giddings said.
