$205 million to duplicate Nelson Bay Road

NSW Government: In a significant win for Port Stephens, a re-elected NSW Liberals & Nationals Government will commit a further $205 million for the Nelson Bay Road duplication project from Williamtown to Bobs Farm.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the major upgrade was essential for a road used by more than 25,000 motorists a day, a figure that soars during peak periods.
“As the Hunter and NSW continue to grow, so does the number of motorists using our roads. Nelson Bay Road is a crucial connection for residents, but can become very busy during holiday periods,” Ms Berejiklian said.
“That’s no surprise, since Port Stephens is one of the most beautiful areas of the State, but it’s important for residents and visitors that the roads are meeting demand.
“That’s why we’re delivering major road upgrades and improvements to make it easier, faster and safer for people to get around.
“We are planning these improvements to support tourism and local industries as a major economic driver in the Port Stephens area.”
In May 2015, the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government completed duplication of another section of Nelsons Bay Road, from Bobs Farm to Anna Bay. Today’s commitment is in addition to $70 million already allocated, which has funded planning, development and initial works.
Nelson Bay Road is a 43km corridor stretching from Stockton Bridge to the Church Street intersection, and is the major connection from Newcastle to Newcastle Airport and the Williamtown RAAF base.
Liberal candidate for Port Stephens Jaimie Abbott said duplication of Nelson Bay Road from Williamtown to Bobs Farm would improve safety for road users.
“The duplication from Bobs Farm to Anna Bay has been fantastic, so I’m thrilled that the Liberals & Nationals Government will extend it back to Williamtown. This is a big win for Port Stephens and I know the community will be so pleased,” Mrs Abbott said.
