Planning for Tasmania’s future
01 November 2018
Tasmanian Government:
In a first for Tasmania, the
Hodgman Liberal Government introduced a Bill today to establish policies
that will guide the strategic direction for Tasmania’s
planning system.
As
Tasmania’s population grows, so does demand for housing, transport
infrastructure, and services. The Tasmanian Planning Policies will be
instrumental in planning and catering for future demand.
The draft Land Use Planning and Approvals Amendment (Tasmanian
Planning Policies and Miscellaneous Amendments) Bill 2018 introduces the
mechanism to create Tasmanian Planning Policies (TPPs).
These policies will inform our planning system to promote
sustainable development, good planning, social and economic wellbeing,
and the protection of Tasmania's natural environment and heritage
values.
The Government has already started scoping work on developing these
Policies, with an initial focus on settlement, liveable communities and
infrastructure. This is in recognition of our growing State’s needs.
TPPs will be developed by drawing on the extensive knowledge and
experience both within government and from specialist organisations and
community groups.
Tasmanian Planning Policies are in addition to our commitment to deliver
Australia’s first state-wide planning scheme, which will provide
certainty and consistency in the rules and objectives of the planning
system in Tasmania.
