Light Rail under City Deal will benefit local businesses

25 January Y2018

Tasmanian Government: A Hobart City Deal that incorporates Light Rail will be a game-changer for residents and businesses along the currently non-operational rail line.

Today, it was my pleasure to visit St Albi Bar and Eatery in Moonah, where I spoke to the proprietor Lucy Baker and Hobart Northern Suburbs Rail Action Group President Ben Johnston about the benefits that Light Rail can bring to Hobart and the northern suburbs.

Light Rail would be a boon for all businesses, and especially those along the rail line in the northern suburbs as it gives people another avenue to get out, visit the suburbs and spend money in local shops and eateries.

It will also help to ease Hobart traffic congestion, along with the added bonus of becoming a tourism drawcard in its own right.

With urban renewal and greater population density along this strategic transport corridor, the case for light rail will become compelling, and we will continue working with the Federal Government to progress the detail and bring this vision to reality.

The Hodgman Government always said Light Rail’s time will come- which is why we acted to bank the rail corridor for public transport use- and the Hobart City Deal will bring this vision one step closer.
