A project of Australian firsts: “Hornsdale will forever be my windfarm.”

12 December 2017

GHD: Australia’s push into renewables has empowered highly qualified power engineers to advance their technical capabilities by embracing innovation and remaining adaptive. They play a critical role by filling gaps to protect owner’s interests while navigating the maze of complexities, mitigating risk from start to finish.

Jennie Burdeniuk, GHD Owner’s Engineer for the Hornsdale Wind Farm, says it has been one of the most challenging and promising projects of her career.

“Supporting Neoen Australia through an intense period of transformation was a steep learning curve. Knowing who to bring in to ensure the continuation of work when you are being pulled in different directions takes trust in your team’s technical capability to solve problems as we anticipate them,” adds Jennie.

The South Australia system black event, which occurred just over a year ago, compelled regulators to question and assess wind performance, ultimately leading to delays in the registration process.

This led to Hornsdale Stage 2 being selected for an Australian-first trial to demonstrate the ability for wind farms to provide frequency control services, traditionally provided by coal and gas plants.

Jennie says she “considers herself extremely fortunate to be working with Neoen during this exciting time – being involved in ground-breaking projects, including the largest battery in the world.”

The 100 MW/129 MWh battery installation known as the Hornsdale Power Reserve is currently being constructed close to the Hornsdale Wind Farm. Jennie is managing the registration and licensing process on behalf of Neoen.

“Big ideas are being fully realised. The world’s biggest battery installation project will further change the way the market is operating which makes today’s challenges very rewarding.

“I’ve found that being flexible, adapting to change and working collaboratively with all stakeholders has been critical to successfully navigating these projects,” adds Jennie.

“I am committed and take full ownership of my role. I take it completely personally - Hornsdale will forever be my windfarm.”
