Victoria's West Gate Tunnel needed, must go well

06 April 2017

IPA: The appointment of preferred contractors to deliver Victoria’s West Gate Tunnel Project sees Melbourne’s vital second river crossing becoming a reality – and it’s an important project for Victoria’s reputation - says Infrastructure Partnerships Australia.

“It’s obvious that Victoria needs the West Gate Tunnel to relieve traffic and provide an alternative river crossing of the Maribyrnong River,” said Chief Executive Brendan Lyon.

“Victoria will house 10 million people in a few short decades meaning major infrastructure like the West Gate Tunnel, is sorely needed.

“With builders selected and detailed approvals being sought, it’s important that the West Gate Tunnel avoids the heavy politicisation that dogged the East West Link and now sees WA making the same mistake.

“Victoria is doing a lot of good projects, made possible by the $10 billion lease of the Port of Melbourne.

“The West Gate Tunnel is Victoria’s first large motorway since the East West was cancelled, so it’s important that Victoria’s Parliament is steady and supportive for the contract.”
